ROLE
Print Editor & Layout Designer
TEAM MEMBERS
  • Editor-in-chief
  • 2 content writers
  • 4 to 5 layout designers
DURATION
February 2021 - February 2023

The Creators Collective is a student initiative and student-run organization at the University of Waterloo. They are dedicated to empowering and supporting creative communities, fostering a vibrant environment for students to explore their creativity.

I was part of the Edition team which is the publication arm of our initiative. The edition was an opportunity for creators to express their voices and creativity through a publication platform. After completing a term, the publication would be printed physically and given out to the student body. Our team worked closely with the design and gallery team for branding guidelines and coming up with themes.

CONCLUSION

Takeaways

Over an extended period with the team, I collaborated with three distinct editors-in-chief, each possessing unique personalities and work styles. Despite their individual approaches to organizing meetings, they effectively led a diverse team with varying levels of design experience.

This experience introduced me to a unique design approach distinct from my typical coursework. I'm pleased that I ventured into a different design medium, discovering similarities in the process that provided me with a deeper comprehension of print page layouts and the amount of consideration that must be thought of to produce a high-quality publication.

SHOWCASE

UNLOCK

Winter 2021 edition

“This year marks the fifth publication of The Edition, and the second online copy since the start of COVID-19. With this new normal, we've been thrown into unfamiliar conditions more than ever. To try and unlock your potential is scary. New and unknown situations are intimidating, but it's those circumstances in which we experience the best personal development. But that's where we come in. If this magazine had ultimate motive, it would be to support the development of young artists like yourself.”

SPECTRA

Winter 2022 edition

“Spectra is about celebrating differences and disorder. For the seventh publication of the Edition, we wanted to highlight groundbreaking art that may not fit into a specific category, but definitely fits into a wide range of spectrums. It is about celebrating you in your truest, boldest, most colorful form. This edition is about showcasing all of your colours, and letting them shine through in your artistry.”

Dusk and Dawn

Fall 2022 edition

“Though they could not be more different, Dusk and Dawn is a symbol of change; inspiring us in new ways, and as our surroundings transform, so does our art. We encouraged artists to reflect on their own experiences of creating during Dusk and Dawn, to see how they were inspired by their surroundings and how it energized their creative process. Beyond that, we wanted to see how people’s creative processes might have their own Dusk and Dawn (beginning and end), and what that may look like, as each artist’s process is unique to them alone. In this Edition, we tried to take readers on a journey from dusk til dawn, reflected by the page colours slowly changing from start to finish.”

NoTheme

Fall 2023 edition

“Without restrictions, without limitations, there’s nothing to stop you from leaping into anything your mind can imagine. NoTheme represents the creative freedom that comes with art and every individual’s unique vision. There are no rules, limits, or judgments. This Edition is an extension of our 2023 Gallery held at the Stratford campus, and a reminder that you can create anything you put your mind to.”
